Justin Holcomb and his wife, Lindsey, wrote Rid of My Disgrace, a book for victims of sexual assault. Pastors should assume that 1 in 5 of their congregants is suffering or has suffered as a victim of sexual assault–and be prepared to counsel and care for those hurting with the hope of the gospel.

Here's the stats quoted for you to think about as you look out over your people:

• 10-14% of marriages are dealing with sexual assault
• 1 in 4 women are victims of sexual assault
• 1 in 6 men are victims of sexual assault 
• 10% of children have experienced incest (not just sexual assault)
• 16-19 year old girls are 4 times more likely than the general population to be assaulted
• 80% of sexual assault victims are under 30 years old
• 15-20% of victims are under the age of 12

When have you been in desperate need and got relief? How did you respond? As Jesus walks toward Jerusalem, he encounters ten lepers who suffered physically and psychologically and were social and religious outcasts. He had compassion on them and healed them, giving them the relief they longed for. Yet only one came back to thank Jesus.

We are all spiritual lepers. However, the Father’s unfathomable love for us compelled him to send his Son to heal our horrific condition. The atoning death and victorious resurrection of Jesus restore those who have faith in him.
